THE Iceberg
1 pm – 2 hour boat tour Iceberg Quest was changed to a 5 hour tour to go see “the largest Iceberg the tour operators had ever seen around Twillingate”.
The glacial icebergs in the Twillingate area come from Greenland and are 10,000-15,000 years old. Seven-eighths of the iceberg’s mass is below water.
What causes the streaks and colours in icebergs?
As glaciers creep over land, melt water fills the crevasses and later freezes, creating clear, bubble-free ice. This shows up as bluish streaks in icebergs because of the light scattering characteristics of pure ice. Sometimes airborne dust from volcanic eruptions, or the wind, falls on a glacier and becomes trapped inside, forming a noticeably darkened brown or black layer.
It was unbelievable.
